Answers To Your Most Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer
How is the Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer concept different from other programs?
It's not a program. This is a fixed operations process that's designed to drive consistency in the service experience—and uptime for you—for years to come.
How was the Certified Uptime Dealer solution created?
The solution was developed in conjunction with our Dealer Service Advisory Council. It was created within the dealership environment, using intelligence from the dealer network and incorporating dealership best practices. It's been piloted, tested, and proven successful by your Volvo dealers.
What areas of service does the Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer solution address?
Too often, work on trucks with short repair times gets delayed when other trucks require longer repair times. This creates inefficient bottlenecks in the service process and unnecessary downtime. All aspects of a Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer are designed to make a positive impact on your uptime and satisfaction.
Other OEMs are working to improve uptime. How is a Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer different from the competition?
There are four primary differences that distinguish a Volvo Certified Uptime Dealer from other OEM initiatives.

CUSTOMER FOCUSED REQUIREMENTS
The process focuses only on the requirements that make a real difference to you.

REDUCTION IN TOTAL REPAIR TIME
The process is a comprehensive approach that reduces “wasted time” through the duration of the repair, from initial check-in to notification of repair completion.

CHECK-IN EXPERIENCE
The process integrates a code read and ASIST to speed up check-in and inspection. This leading technology provides fast, transparent information to you so you can quickly start making decisions for your trucks, drivers, and loads earlier in the repair process.

COMMUNICATION
The process provides ongoing communication at each step in the repair process, enabling you to make faster, smarter decisions for your business.
How will Certified Uptime Dealers support me?
Faster and improved communication
Reduced dwell time
Greater throughput via improved capacity utilization
Enhanced experience
Improved uptime and satisfaction
Truck Diagnostic System
Does Truck Diagnostic System replace Premium Tech Tool?
No, there are a number of differences between Truck Diagnostic System and PTT. Three primary advantages to Premium Tech Tool are its guided diagnostics, software programming, and ability to be used for warranty work.
What’s the difference between Truck Diagnostic System and Premium Tech Tool?
Truck Diagnostic System is a very fast, light tool that quickly displays truck fault codes within one minute while Premium Tech Tool supports the need for more in-depth diagnostics and extensive parameter changes. See Comparison Chart for specifics.
Are the parameter changes password protected?
Yes, if a fleet chooses to setup password protection on their trucks’ programmable parameters, Truck Diagnostic System will prompt for that password to be entered prior to allowing parameters to be changed. Premium Tech Tool is required initially to establish or change an existing password on the truck.
Can Truck Diagnostic System perform vehicle tests such as cylinder cut outs?
Yes, it can perform manual Cylinder Cut Out, DPF Regeneration, and Learned Data Reset.
Can Truck Diagnostic System adjust user-configurable parameters?
It has the capability to read user-configurable vehicle parameters and it can set Road Speed Limit, Cruise Control Enable, Idle Shutdown, Cruise Control Max Set Speed, and Cruise Control Min Speed on Resume.
Can Truck Diagnostic System clear fault codes?
Yes, it has the ability to clear both active and inactive fault codes. Truck Diagnostic System can also clear proprietary Mack and Volvo PPID and PSID faults.
Can Truck Diagnostic System perform ECU reprogramming?
No, due to security and safety concerns. If you require ECU reprogramming, you will need to use the Premium Tech Tool application.
How does Truck Diagnostic System diagnose aftertreatment issues?
Truck Diagnostic System allows you to see the overall health of the aftertreatment system in one simple screen. The user can easily see values such as Soot Level, DPF Lamp status, Engine derate as it relates to Aftertreatment, and current Regeneration Status. The user can see if there are conditions inhibiting regeneration from taking place. Additionally, the user can start and monitor the DPF Regeneration process using Truck Diagnostic System.

Truck Diagnostic System was designed specifically to meet the needs of Volvo fleets. It was developed primarily for fleets that have light diagnostic needs and want vehicle trip reporting capabilities. Volvo dealerships may see value in having Truck Diagnostic System in their shop, but there is no intention of making it a required tool at this time.
Should I buy the stand-alone system or the JPRO Command Module?
The functionality of Truck Diagnostic System stand-alone or Command Module for JPRO® Commercial Fleet Diagnostics is the same. Body Builder
What is the minimum RPM I should operate my PTO, so that my vehicle will perform Regeneration during PTO mode?
Regeneration in PTO Mode - when a vehicle is being operated in PTO mode and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration is commanded, the engine must be run at a speed above the minimum speeds listed in the tables in Body Builder Manual, Section 9, Table of Contents / Regeneration in PTO Mode. The minimum speed setting can be affected by ambient temperature and/or altitude.
Can the I-Shift change gears while transmission mounted PTO is active?
When a I-Shift mounted PTO is engaged, it is only possible to move the truck in one gear (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) – the transmission will not shift gears when the PTO is active. The transmission will not disengage the PTO once it is turned on and recognized by the VECU or TECU via the factory-installed PTO switch.
On Volvo I-Shift, with PTO engaged while in neutral, and then selecting Drive the PTO stops turning. Why?
Remember that the I-Shift is an automated manual transmission with a clutch. With the PTO engaged while in neutral, when selecting Drive, the clutch is released, then the transmission shifts into gear. When the driver takes his foot off the brake pedal and presses the throttle pedal the clutch will reengage and the PTO will start to turn again. The transmission will not shift gears and driver is limited to about 6 MPH.
Our customer chassis has an I-Shift and has a need for moving PTO operation. What PTO is recommended?
I-Shift transmission mounted PTO’s are primarily used for stand-still operation, with the gearbox in neutral. However it is possible to engage PTO in vehicle speeds up to 6 MPH. If the vehicle is to have a moving PTO operation faster than 6 MPH, an I-Shift with a REPTO or FEPTO may be the better choice.
During the body upfit, is programming PTO parameter logic so the truck operates to the customer’s requirements covered by the Volvo warranty?
PTO parameter programming is considered part of the body upfit expense. The selling dealer and/or body builder is responsible for the correct application and/or specification for a vehicle sold to a customer. Vehicle application issues are not covered by the Volvo warranty.
Where do I locate a power, lighting, and ground source for PTO installation?
Utilization of Body Builder connectors ordered and provided by Volvo is strongly recommended as your power source for Body Builder PTO installation and operation. Tapping into wiring harnesses is not recommended as it may affect message transmission within the harness. Tapping into an OEM harness will void the warranty of the harness, should it be incorrectly used to supply power to PTO equipment. Be sure to consult with your local Volvo dealer when ordering trucks to ascertain proper connectors are supplied when the vehicle is manufactured. Ref: Section 3 of the Volvo Body Builder Manual for the different body builder connectors that are offered.
Can I lock which Range my PTO is operated in to stop my drivers from over speeding my equipment?
Yes the I-Shift Transmission has parameters for PTO 1 and PTO 2 operation which will prevent drivers from shifting from Low to High Split: Split gear for Transmission PTO 1 is P1AO5; 0 = Selectable, 1 = Low Split, 2 = High Split Split gear for Transmission PTO 2 is P1AO6; 0 = Selectable, 1 = Low Split, 2 = High Split
