A conversation with the Volvo Trucks product marketing manager about the all-new VNR

Q: Let’s start with the basics, introduce us to the new VNR family?

A: “The new VNR is specifically designed to answer the needs of fleets that run local and regional routes. There are four cab sizes. We start with our popular day cab, the VNR 300. Then there’s the VNR 440, which is our smallest midroof sleeper. The 440 is perfect for applications where the driver is out on the road for a night or two, or maybe their hours of service or in question.

“The VNR also comes in our 640 and 660 models. The VNR 640 is a 62-inch midroof sleeper and the VNR 660 is our full height, 62-inch offering. They are both ideal for regional or longer routes where the driver still ends up in a really tight situation and needs the extra bit of maneuverability.

“The all-new VNR comes in a 6x4, 6x2 and 4x2 axle configurations. All of these models and configurations are also available as a tractor or a straight truck, making these the most versatile and street smart trucks we've ever offered. They work perfectly in many different applications whether it's food and beverage, LTL, tanker applications…really almost every application you can think of.”

Q: Talk about the superior visibility this VNR offers.

A: “The new VNR is perfect for tough cornering situations, not just because of the maneuverability but it’s improved sightline. This cab has 17% more forward visibility thanks to the hood slope and new position of the A-pillar.”

Q: What about fuel efficiency?

A: “This will be up to 7.5% more fuel efficient than our legacy VNR model. 40% of that improvement comes from powertrain enhancements and the rest is achieved from the new aerodynamic shape. And that 7.5% improvement is available even in our day cab model, which we believe is going to make it very popular with our customers.”

Q: This truck looks as good as it performs, tell us about the trim levels available for the new VNR.

A: “The all-new VNR comes in two unique trim levels making it perfect for those customers that require a real blend of design and function.

“Our Core trim level is for fleets that may be running more in-town applications or routes where the cab could see greater wear and tear. The chassis fairings are a mold-in color, along with the mirror covers, therefore there is never any repainting of these parts. If a mold-in color part does ever have to be replaced, it’s a simple switch out. And the Core exterior offers a chrome metal bumper.

“We also offer the Edge trim level, with a greater selection of matching painted accents, for customers that want a more sophisticated look for their fleet.”

Spotlight on maneuverability

Q: A lot of innovation goes into making the VNR one of the most maneuverable trucks in the industry. What can you tell us about the design features that lead to its superior maneuverability?

A: “To create a truck with exceptional maneuverability, we started from scratch during the concept phase with the VNR. This truck is 90% new, allowing us to innovate freely.

The all-new VNR is one of the most maneuverable trucks on the road, thanks to its 50-degree wheel cut and a significantly shortened hood.

“In redesigning the hood, we made the slope more aggressive to enhance visibility during tight maneuvers. Recognizing the importance of wall-to-wall turning, we also ensured that the bumpers are tucked in on each side, making this the most maneuverable truck we've ever built.”

Q: How does better maneuverability take some of the stress out of driving for local and regional delivery?

A: “Regional haul drivers have different needs compared to over-the-road drivers, as they frequently operate in urban or crowded areas. They often navigate tight alleys or what I refer to as "hidden docks," where roadways are filled with obstacles that require careful maneuvering. This can lead to challenging situations that are extremely stressful for drivers. Using the right tools can make any job easier and less stressful.

“The new VNR can alleviate some of that stress by providing drivers with improved wall-to-wall turning capabilities to help them maneuver out of tight spots. Additionally, the enhanced visibility and Volvo Dynamic Steering with personal settings contribute to reducing stress, allowing drivers to see more around them. With just a click, the steering wheel shifts to a highly maneuverable mode, enabling the driver to turn with just one finger.”
