Built from the ground up, and designed to thrive in urban and suburban environments, the all-new Volvo VNR sets new standards for local and regional hauling

In the trucking industry, they say good enough is never good enough. And at Volvo Trucks, a relentless pursuit of better is driving innovation across seemingly everything that the company is doing, and launching, right now.

The all-new Volvo VNR embodies this forward-leaning philosophy. It’s a distinctive and purposefully built new entry for local and regional hauls. The VNR is poised to redefine urban and suburban deliveries, while raising expectations for drivers and fleet owners.

"Imagine a driver that’s in and out of the city every day. There’s road congestion and darting pedestrians. Tight turns, and even tighter parking. This truck was built for that driver," says Bobby Compton, lead product marketing manager for the VNR introduction at Volvo Trucks North America.

The all-new VNR represents a comprehensive rethinking of what a regional delivery truck can be. With a staggering 90% redesign compared to the previous model, Volvo Trucks has created a vehicle that blends safety, maneuverability, design thinking and powertrain efficiency in striking new ways.

Safety first, second, and always

For decades, Volvo's name has been synonymous with safety innovation. The new VNR continues this tradition with groundbreaking features designed specifically for urban environments, and aimed at keeping drivers, pedestrians, and everyone else, protected.

The safety breakthroughs start with a new central nervous system for the vehicle. The 24-volt electrical architecture, the first by an OEM in North America, enables faster and more accurate diagnostics, making the integration of next-generation active safety features possible. Plus, it comes equipped with industry-first safety innovations such as the E-Call emergency response system and optional side curtain airbags.

“When we talk about safety, we are really focused on finding ways to reduce the number of accidents when driving a truck,” says Maddie Sullivan, product marketing manager for Volvo Trucks North America. “But this new truck offers two new safety features that are as good for drivers as they are for everyone else on the road: lane keep assist and the camera monitor system.”

The VNR’s camera monitor system (CMS) can replace traditional side mirrors with sleek, aerodynamic cameras that provide superior visibility, even in low-light conditions. Lane keep assist is a support system that tracks lane markers and can alert the driver while providing subtle steering assistance.

“When you consider the combination of lane keep assist and Volvo’s proprietary Active Safety Platform—which includes forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking—it quickly becomes evident that the new VNR is one of the safest trucks Volvo has ever built,” adds Sullivan.

But safety isn’t just about technology; it’s also about simplifying the driver’s job. “As a driver, my favorite feature is the Volvo Dynamic Steering, which makes it so much easier to make tight turns, especially when you’re in urban areas,” Sullivan remarks.

Street smart: versatility meets maneuverability

One sure way to describe the new VNR is “ready for anything.” Designed for regional and urban delivery, this truck is as flexible as it is nimble.

“It’s street smart and versatile,” which serves a crucial segment of the Class 8 market says Compton. “The VNR is a dynamic work truck ready to meet to the demands of urban delivery and designed to outperform across an array of applications such as food and beverage, petroleum and oil, dry or liquid bulk haul, and more.”

With a 17% improvement in forward visibility, the VNR is very well suited for navigating pedestrian-filled areas. Its tight turning radius enables driving in congested city streets. Offering tractor and straight-truck configurations for both day cabs and sleepers, the VNR is equipped to handle everything from last-mile deliveries to multi-day, multi-stop regional hauls.

Fulfilling a bold vision

The VNR’s design presents a blend of form and function, with every detail tailored to the needs of urban and suburban driving.

“Building off of our visual strategy, it all started with ideation and inspiration,” says Brian Balicki, head of design for Volvo Trucks North America. “It was really important for us to connect to the customer. The design of the VNR is geared toward drivers in urban environments, who are frequently in and out of the vehicle. Because of that, there is a lot of consideration paid to ergonomics and visibility.”

This customer-centric approach seems to have shaped every aspect of the truck's design.

“One of the great things about the VNR is its contoured, leaned-forward look. It’s ready to go, ready to do the job,” Balicki adds. "The proportions and its dynamic stance deliver agility and performance."

Built with the driver in mind

For drivers who spend every day behind the wheel, comfort is essential for safety and optimized performance. The all-new VNR immediately tops the list for interior design in the regional haul category.

The day cab is laid out to keep everything easily within reach of the driver. An intuitive driver information display sits directly in front, putting all primary gauges and levels in easy view. Controls are intentionally placed close at hand to reduce reaching and keep attention on the road.

The sleeper models feature one of the industry's largest mattresses with two levels of firmness and an industry-first reclining mattress in the 660 and 640 models, making sleep easier. The relaxing sleeping environment is further enhanced with overlapping curtains that virtually eliminate light in the cabin, while the new lighting system reduces glare with strategically placed overhead, footwell, and backwall mounted lamps.

“Smart storage solutions abound, including the option to turn the upper bunk into additional storage and a convenient wardrobe unit tucked behind the driver's seat,” adds Balicki. “These thoughtful touches reflect Volvo Trucks’ understanding that driver comfort directly impacts productivity.”

Aerodynamics and powertrain: A fuel efficiency dynamic duo

The new VNR is up to 7.5% more efficient than the company’s previous model thanks to game-changing enhancements to aerodynamics, powertrain innovations, and anti-idling technologies. In fact, these powertrain enhancements are responsible for nearly 40% of the fuel efficiency increases.

“The first thing you see are the aerodynamic improvements,” says Duane Tegels, powertrain product marketing manager for Volvo Trucks North America. “The truck is designed to cut through the air, reducing the amount of horsepower needed to pull a load.”

The new Volvo D13 Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) engine will come standard in VNR models. The D13 VGT engine builds on the improvements launched with the D13 Turbo Compound (TC) engine in 2024. The D13 VGT and TC engines will be available a range of configurations, offering 405-455 hp and 1450-1850 lb.-ft of torque.

“Both of these D13 engine options feature a new 7-wave piston that disperses heat more effectively, improving combustion and reducing nitrous oxide (Nox),” adds Tegels. “Add in faster shifting speeds for a 30% improvement in shifting efficiency, and the VNR’s powertrain is suddenly more able to help the engine stays in its ‘sweet spot’ longer, further maximizing fuel economy.”

The final word: A new truck built to exceed expectations

From its leading-edge safety features to its fuel-saving powertrain, the VNR was designed to keep drivers moving and make every mile count. Also, it represents a fundamental shift in what regional delivery trucks can achieve.

“It’s a truck both inspired and required by today’s customer,” says Compton, “With the VNR, Volvo has once again raised the bar, proving that even in the most demanding environments, innovation always finds a way.”
