Professional drivers weigh in on what makes the VNL their truck of choice.
The Volvo VNL comes packed with so many innovations that narrowing them down feels almost unfair. From aerodynamic breakthroughs to advanced safety systems, this truck represents a complete reimagining of what long-haul comfort and performance should be
As you’d expect, drivers who've put serious miles on the VNL aren’t shy about sharing their thoughts on their new truck. Here’s five features that keep getting rave reviews.
#1 A sleeper that feels like home
Truck cabs serve as office, living room, bedroom, and sometimes kitchen. The VNL's sleeper configurations acknowledge this reality with thoughtful design choices that make the space genuinely livable.
The reclining bunk, an industry first, allows drivers to adjust their sleeping position for maximum comfort. For those who prefer more traditional setups, the dinette remains available through a new Murphy-style foldable bunk design. This updated approach gives occupants the opportunity for a premium mattress while also making it easy to change the environment—from setting up for dinner or paperwork to turning in for a restful night—compared to the previous VNL dinette option. When stowed against the back wall, the bunk creates an impressively large space for meals, paperwork, or simply stretching out.

"My single favorite feature in the VNL is the Murphy bed with the premium mattress,” says Minnesota-based driver Kurt McLeod. McLeod lives in his VNL 860 full time, so his word carries a lot of weight. “I’ve never slept on anything that nice in a truck. It’s also way easier to get the table down now; you don’t have to take apart the whole bed.”

#2 Quiet comfort: Insulation and light control
Long-haul comfort depends on factors most people never think about until they're missing. Sound insulation ranks high on that list, especially for team drivers when one person needs to sleep while the other drives. To that end, the VNL adds up to 82% more insulation than the previous model, creating a noticeably quieter cab and a more restful environment overall.
Light control matters just as much. An overlapping magnetic curtain creates an effective seal, while enhanced window shades give drivers precise control over their sleep environment. New interior lighting with adjustable ambient colors can be dimmed as needed, providing enough illumination for visibility without disturbing the driver or other occupants.
"The new airplane-style window shades are amazing," says Cynthia Soza, who runs weekly 5,000-mile trips with her husband in their VNL 860. She notes that the improvements have transformed her sleep quality. "I used to wake up every time my husband would stop for any reason. But now it's like sleeping on a cloud."

Quality sleep translates directly to alertness behind the wheel, making these comfort features genuine safety improvements.
#3 The Volvo Parking Cooler: Sleep better, drive better
For drivers, rest isn't a luxury. It's a necessity that directly impacts safety and performance. The integrated Volvo Parking Cooler delivers consistent, quiet climate control with less idling, less fuel burn, and fewer emissions.
The system is paired with a 24-volt electrical architecture and components designed to provide long hours of comfort, even in demanding conditions. All Parking Coolers are also equipped with an automatic start feature that restarts the truck when needed to protect battery charge and ensure reliable operation.
The business case is equally compelling. Compared to traditional engine idling, the integrated Parking Cooler can save fleets more than $10,000 annually per truck in fuel and maintenance costs.

“When you look at the full picture including reduced idle hours, less engine wear, and a quieter, more restful environment for the driver…the value of an integrated solution becomes clear,” says Duane Tegels, Product Marketing Manager, Volvo Trucks North America.
#4 Suspension: The smooth operator
Volvo redesigned all four suspension areas on the VNL: front, engine, cab, and rear. Longer, more robust front springs deliver superior handling and comfort for long drives, while the enhanced stabilizer bar provides added stability and control on curvy roads and windy highways. Plus, new engine mounts and a revised cab suspension design help transfer less vibration and noise into the cab.
“The handling is unmatched, no other truck drives quite like it,” says driver Lakov Latypov from the seat of his VNL 860. “It combines comfort for long hauls, smooth ride and handling, excellent sound insulation, and the reliability I depend on. Add in fuel efficiency, and it’s more than just a truck, it’s the right partner for the road.”

The optional Global Rear Air Suspension uses upright shocks and tuned airbags to cushion the vehicle while counteracting frame lift during acceleration. The cab suspension features a wider stance at the rear airbag locations, increasing cab stability. Improved bushings and longer rear shocks complete the package.
#5 Eyes everywhere: Camera systems and visibility
Visibility has always been paramount in trucking safety. The VNL takes a comprehensive approach, combining an expansive wrapped windshield with advanced camera systems that give drivers unprecedented awareness of their surroundings.
The optional Camera Monitor System (CMS) represents the cutting edge of this approach. Mounted inside the cab on the A-pillars, the CMS displays complement traditional mirrors with a wider viewing angle. Infrared technology creates sharper views in low light, making nighttime operation easier and safer.
"With the blind-side assist and pre-trip assist on this truck, everything works well," says Pierre Keys, a nine-year veteran who drives a 2026 VNL 860 he calls "Purple Rain." He particularly values the visibility improvements when training new drivers, where the camera systems and tight turning radius make backing maneuvers significantly easier to master.
The system includes a forward-looking camera that recognizes road signs and displays them on the 12-inch Digital Information Display, giving drivers more time to respond safely. With the multi-camera option, drivers can connect up to six additional cameras and cycle through different views on the infotainment screen.
Beyond the features: The total package
Listen to drivers talk about the VNL and the conversation inevitably moves beyond individual features to something larger. It's about how everything works together to create a truck that simply feels right.
"The first word that came to mind was wow," Oleksandr Klymenko recalls about his first time seeing the VNL. "From the sleek exterior to the modern interior, it felt like stepping into the future of trucking. The comfort level and technology instantly stood out—it's a truck built with drivers in mind."
"The first word that came to mind was wow."
Latypov echoes the sentiment, "The design stood out right away. It feels modern, bold, and you can tell it was built with drivers in mind from the very first glance."
“Being a truck driver, I enjoy seeing the country and going to different places," Keys says. "Even as long as I've been driving, I'm still seeing new places."
